Save Classic buttery thumbprint cookies flavored with almond and filled with budget-friendly cherry jam for a delightful, festive treat.
I made these cherry almond thumbprint cookies for a holiday party last year and they disappeared within minutes. Their bright jam centers and toasty almond edges were a hit with kids and grown-ups alike.
Ingredients
- Cookies: 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter, softened, 2/3 cup (130 g) granulated sugar, 1 large egg yolk, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 1 1/2 tsp almond extract, 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour, 1/4 tsp salt
- Filling: 1/2 cup (160 g) cherry jam (budget-friendly or homemade), 1,2 tbsp water (if jam is very thick)
- Garnish (optional): 1/4 cup (25 g) sliced almonds
Instructions
- Prep:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Cream Batter:
- Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Beat in egg yolk, vanilla extract, and almond extract.
- Make Dough:
- Add flour and salt, mixing until soft dough forms.
- Shape:
- Roll dough into 1 inch (2.5 cm) balls and place on the lined sheets, spaced 2 inches apart.
- Indent & Fill:
- Press thumb or spoon in each ball to make a well. Stir water into thick jam if needed. Fill each well with cherry jam.
- Garnish:
- Sprinkle sliced almonds around edges if using.
- Bake & Cool:
- Bake 13,15 minutes until edges are golden. Cool 5 minutes before moving to rack.
Save My kids love helping press the thumbprints and fill them with jam. It's a fun family baking activity, especially during the holidays.

Recipe Guide
- → Can I substitute almond extract with another flavor?
Yes, vanilla extract works well as a substitute, or you may try other nut extracts for a different but complementary taste.
- → How do I ensure the jam doesn't leak during baking?
If your cherry jam is too thick, stir in a tablespoon or two of water before filling to soften and prevent leakage.
- → Can these be made nut-free?
Omit almond extract and sliced almonds to avoid nuts while maintaining a delicious cookie base.
- → What is the best way to store these cookies?
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week to maintain freshness and texture.
- → Are there alternative fillings recommended?
Apricot, raspberry, or strawberry preserves make excellent alternatives that complement the buttery dough.
